J. A. Hanan says that only two applications for tho primary school buildings at Palmerston North aro beforo the department. The department haa not objected to recommend; grants for <**«Titiat class room accommodation. On the contrary, in one of tho cases referred to it'actually suggested increasing the aocOmmodation; bu.t it objected to unnecessarily expensive features embodied in the plans. In one case the plans submitted embodied the provision of a pavilion or assembly hall to cost about £4000. The department's objection to this was submitted to tho board .in September last, but no amended proposals had yet been received. Mr Hanan emphasised that only limited funds were available, and there aro urgent demands from many districts.
