TREATMENT OF DEBTORS.
(To the Editor of the Daily Times.) S"V-~The trufch of the old adage, " save me from my inends,''could not have beea better illustrated than by <• Ventas's" letter in your issue of to-day. Instead of attempting to dispute the facts, and refute the arguments in the letter signed "An Unfortunate Debtor," in your issue of the Bth inst, he points out the duties of nur officers and the qualities they should possess ("the meekness of a quaker and thophiLinthropliyofa Howard/and similar fulsome bombast) to eaable them to perform properly the said duties. Now sir, while fully admitting their duties to be most arduous, we confidently assert that there is nothing inconsistent in the. due and faithful performance of said duties, with their being performed in a gentlemanly and conciliating manuer—prominent and characteristic traits iv all great men. particularly those holding the highest offices. ■ We have greatpleasure in acknowledging that our most efficient officers and wardens do so, and trust that their manly and faithful performance of those duties will be properly rewarded. We italicise manly in contrast, to the bullying, sneaking, und offensive manner of the" unenviable few." : : -~>. •As no debtor" has been discharged since the new bye laws complained of,; came into force, who did not approve of the letter of the Bth insfc; your correspondaut ; inforraafciony so^hastily obtained, cannot be^liable.; Had he honored/us with a visit or otherwise taken the trouble to get properly" posted up, he, we doubt not, would have advocated the rescindiugot the obnoxious new byelaws- aud a courteous aud gentlemanly manner towards your obedient servants. -^ ■"■.>■ ■-~._ >V^. h .;v;.:r:;.-i^ :-W- ■■- ■■■'■■.■'•■ rr■■-•.«• >, , w.' ,ii^?6ltTaNAfflßl)BßTOnS; So M\f *?h^P une(lin j:S&tta September, 1862.
