Drunkenness.—Arthur Beaton pleaded guilty to being drunk in the streets, and was fined iii 20s, or 48 hours' imprisonment in default of payment.—John Price also pleaded guilty, and had the same sentence passed upon him.—Antonio Mouski was charged with a similar offence. A constable stated that about halfpast one that morning he found defendant lying insensibly drunk in the street opposite the Commercial Hotel, _ and had him wheeled to the watchhouse. There it was discovered that he had somehow sprained his ancle so severely that he had to be brought to court in a machine. Defendant, who appeared very penitent, pleaded guilty, and in consideration of the injury he bad received, he was dismissed with an admonition.
Assaulting a Constable. - James Felix was ac- • cused of be'ng drunk in Maclaggan-street on Mon- ] day, there using obscene language, and assaulting a : constable in the execution of his duty. From the evidence it aopeared that Constable Neil had been - 3 ent for by Mr Macintosh, Maclaggan-street, to re- ; move tbe prisoner from the premises. He left after : some remonstrance from the constable, but I continued to obstruct the footpath, aud on ; being requested to clear it he went to the centre ; of the street, and there used most indecent language I towards Mr Macintosh, causing a crowd to assemble. Niel was then going to apprehend prisoner, when he ; said, "it would be a good job if hediel," and on being : asked to go quietly, he commenced squaring at the- : constable, and trying to hit him. The crowd closing i in, some one knocked Niel off his feet, and he was in. danger of being maltreated, when a gentleman interfered, and assisted him to retain his "hold of the pri- ; soner, whom a few in the crowd were anxious ,to rescue. Going through the Arcade, prisoner gave this gentleman a kick on the face, and Neil turning round to see who was hurt, had his hand seizeel by the prisoner's teeth, and severely hitten. Afterwards he offered to go quietly, but no sooner was bis iri^hfe arm released, than he struck Neil a violent blow on the face, and it was with great difficulty prisoner could be got to the watchhouse. On being asked by the Bench what he had to say for himself, he pleaded guilty to the assault, and stated that a fortnight ago he fell from a ship's mast, and injured his head. The consequence was that now he losu his senses altogether, when he got two glasses of ijrog. He was sentenced to seven day's imprisonment., for the obscene language, and fourteen days' imprisonment for the assault on the constable.
Theft.—Elizabeth Smith was charged with stealing some towels and other articles from the a.oartraents of James Baker. Prisoner was servant ia the house, and Mrs Baker having misssed the to r/els, a warrant was got, and search made, when they were found in the prisoner's possession. She was remanded, to make enquiry.
CIVIL OASES. Street Obstructions. E. de Carle and Co tvere fined in 10s and costs, for obstructing Princes-street, by loading or unloading goods. Thomas Wright; was fined in absence ss, and costs, for suffering a Taorse and dray to go unattended in Princes-street, Hobt. Martin for allowing 3 cows and a calf to go at large ia Castle-street, was fined ls for each animal.
