WALKER STREET AND HOPE STREET.

(To the Editor of the Daily Times.)

Sir, —I beg permission, through your, paper, to call the attention of tbe ToAvn Board to the nonfulfilment of their promise regarding the formation ancl metalling of Walker and Hope streets. Did the Board really mean what they promised, or was the promise made only to pacify the residents of. those streets, and who had just cause of complaint 1 If the old adage is true that '* actions speak louder than words" it is natural to conclude that the promise of the Board was a farce, aud was made as is a pie crust to be brolsen. I ask with all moderation and due respect, are such a body of men worthy the support and confidence of their fellow-townsmen. Tenders for those streets were called for and accepted about five months since, the work was to be finished in August last; subsequent to this period, at a meeting of the Board, a resolution was passed calling upon tiie contractor to commence operations withiu a fortnight, or forfeit his deposit, and thatthe Board would call for fresh tenders. lias this been done ? No it has not. Why? Who can give the reason] Meeting after meeting has-been held and no motion or resolution tegarding this work has been moved. True, some if the earth in Hope-street is being removed for improving another part of the tOAvn, While a hill cesspool, not many yards from the earth, bank, is emitting its nauseous effluvium to the j great disgust of the olfactory nerves, and to the danger of the lives bf passers by. Inspector Nimon has communicated to the Board some information of this pestilential pool, but no steps are taken regarding the matter. There is, however, one consolation from the fact, the time of the Town Board is at haud, and from office exeunt omnea. I am. Sir, Yours obediently, ;W. HooPEBg , November 2?, 1862.
