'ihe steamship City of Hubart reached the Port in xY.p r^tornoon, softer a fine run from Melbourne. She lift Ilobr-ori's Bay at-4 p in. on Thursday, th.c (Jth jisr.-ttit. ex? en'ence» easterly winds for several duvs, aid ..vnfrequently had moderate weather un!i! Tues-
."ay, wljf-n .sh<; was met wi h hrad whi'Js irovn t!.;e northwtird. th? will loave with the mails on Mon••!fiy, the 17lh. when it h hopfd t!>at she will have more success than, through'insuperable circumstances, she had on the last occasion. On tliat trip the utmost effort was made by Captnin Darby to pusii the vessel forward, -so much bo that his pas engers rebelled against exposure to such weather as they were experiencing ; but the we-ither was umu-ualfy heavy and unfavorable even for The completion of the passage within an average time. The Kangatira arrived in port about the same time as the City of Hobart, keeping her time -accurately, as she has done on her several previous passages. She left Sydney on the Ist instant at 10 p.m., had moderate S.W. winds during the passage to Nelson, where she arrived on the evening of the 6th, making the run in as short a time as 4 days 18 hours, and had the vessel hud a thoroughly clean bottom, and beeu less heavily laden, she would with ease have made it, within foui- days On her last passage up from Nelsox). a'^o; she made an excellent passage, though she f-T countered the same weather as was experienced by thr; City of Hobart. On the New Zealand coast she hud moderate variable winds, and her dates are as t<illow> :—Left Nelson on the Bih at 10 p.m., arrived at Wellington at 10.30 on the 9th ; left Wellington at ') p.m on the 10th, arrived at Port Cooper at 11 a.m., .and left on the same, day at 5.30 p.m. By her speed and th'i regularity of her passages the Rangatira is a very great acquisition to the steam trade of the colony, and it is satisfactory to know that, wi h sufficient encouragement, the Company purpose continuing the vessel on the passage, havii.g at present mure.thau onelarge and fast.sailing steamer in preparation at home for the colonial trade, intended to take the place of those which have lately, by accident or otherwise, been withdrawn. 4
The Nor'-wester is reported as having arrived at Melbourne on the 4th inst. The EveJina Gutter sailed on the same day. The fhij) Excellent sailed outwnrds on the 4th, and the cutter Folly sailed same day. The Don Juan sailed from Sydney for Otaco on the 4th, and the Met avis, from Newcastle, on the 3rd. The ship Hunnymede, for Otago, left Port Phillip Heads on the 4th.
Of the new steamer Golden Age, intended for the Duncdin .and Port Chalmcis trade, the Melbourne Herald of the Gf.li fays:—" The steamer Golden Age, lately built by Messrs W. and G. White, of Williamstown, and of which a description was given in these columns shortly before her launch, got up ste»ii) yesterday afternoon, and proceeded down the river'towr:rds Williainstown, whif.h she reached in forty-six minutes. The di&iancn is iuliy eight miles, therefore, notwithstanding the stillness of machinery, &<\, she averaged ten arid a quarter miles per hour. It is, however, confidently expected That, when everything is in working order, she will be enabled to'steam twelve." In addition to this fine s'eatner, sevii;;! others are expectrd for the Port trade. Mr Douglas, of the Betsy Douglas, has one on board the Scvillaj imported from Scotland. Messrs Dyason and Adams, of ilie Lady Barkly, have another boat on the stocks :.t Melbourne. Mr Keith, late of the Sanu-on, has had another just completed ; and there is a talk of a fourth coining from HoLarf Town. With this number the trade of the place is likely to be rather overwell supplied than otherwise.
