EXPENDITURE ON PUBLIC ROADS.
(To the Editor of the Otago Daily Times.) - Sir,—l happen to be "one of those who are loud iv their complaints against the Town Board, whose policy it would appear to be to spend the public money in the neighborhood of their own properties, on works, that for some time.to come at least, must prove of yery trifling advantage to the people generally, while wholly neglecting some of the most important parts of the city;, whose thoroughfares, ifopened-up, would hot only add to the;natural and commercial advantages of the place, but give something in rettirn: to the.residents and owners, of property for the heavy taxes they pay, in.common with others whose.properties are enhanced in their value by the expenditure of them in.th^ir own immediate vicinities. For instance, why is King-street .neglected to be opened through, though having equal/ if not superior, practicable advantage's ' .with* -Uebrge^street,—being the natural high-way to Port .Chalmers the5 Duristan diggings, and the North ? and why. are-these streets parallel \vith King-street, along the beach, where'inif-. provements could havebeeu so easily affected, :and'at such/little expense, whose copimemal advantages are" mdisputable--why are these absolutely looked over, while other; works of minor importance are Being.pTosecuted with such energy"?. J -Ithink it is high: time that some fresh "blood was fusiea;in, to.^e; deliberate xsouricUs of that august Boai'd, whi »Iflight indu'ce'them^tp meet and consul t *ox\ the geiyji^i,gbd#, and disburse'thfe funds confided] to their tnariagemeiit more for the -public than tfieir! own private interests. Your obedient servant, A RESIDENT OJP KlNa-STRBET. i
