SALE OF LAND IN CANTERBURY AND OTAGO.
{To the Editor of the Daily Times.) Sin, -I perceive in your issue of to-day a paragraph recording that " among tbe land purchasers in Canterbury, occurs the name of Mr Hartley, the discoverer of the Dunstau gold field, who has bought 500 acres, and I am told, intends to settle and cultivate them," with the comment: "So it seems that Canterbury, if she has no stores of precious metals, has the art of extracting it from her more richly gifted neighbors, and may look on very complacently at every fresh discovery in the south, certain that in the long run, a goodly share will find its way into her treasury." To which I would add the further comment, that this is but one instance among hundreds ; and that au ever increasing "goodly share" of the capital earned in Otago will find its way into the same channel, so ong as the uncertainty resulting from the preposterous "improvement clause" exists, to frighten all but very venturesome men—and such as, from circumstances, have practically no choice from investing in land in this province. Tbe sale "act" which Canterbury employs to " extract the precious metals from her more richly gifted neighbors," consists in offering to settlers an immediate and absolute title, to the lands for which they pay their money.
