POST-OFFICE NEGLECT.

(To the Editor of the Otago Daily Times.) Sir, —Will you kindly allow me an opportunity through your columns, of complaining; about the very inefficient state in which mutters are coudufted in the Post-office. I am, to a certain extent, a sufferer through their negligence, and I must beg to state the circumstances. About three weeks ago I was advised from Melbourne that a letter containing valuable documents had hceu parted on a certain, date to mo, to be kit at Dunedin Post-office. On making application, I was told repeatedly, and with, but scant civility, that such a letter had not arrived at the office at all. You will, therefore, guess my surprise at receiving, among others, by the last mail, the identical letter, after it had lain at the office for more than two w.^eks. It had Ihe Dunedin postmark of 20ih October. Now, Sir, I must protest, as a business man, that such treatment is only calculated to bring the Post-office into contempt, and at the same time the uncortaiuty of a safe communication must, as in my case, entail great inconvenience on the public. Where letters aie thus mislaid, of course, newspapers have only a poor chance. Out of three which I am certain were sent, I only received one. While on the subject, I will mention another grievance, which I am sure every person who has purchased a stamp will readily subrcribe to. I allude to the vile compound, which forms the adhesive portion of the stamps. I should imagine that when one takes a physic, that it should be in the regular orthodox fashion only, at any rate. I certainly question the right of the Post-office authorities to dose the public with the horrible stuff. Hoping you will favor this with a place in yonr columns,. I beg to remain, lleopeetfully yours, A. T. Dunedin, 10th November. [We should advise our correspondent to communicate with the Postma-ster, Mr ifarr, vyho, on a former oocasiou permitted us to say that he is always willing to receive, and redress complaints that the public have against officials in his o!hce.]E». D. T. ]
