ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.

IMPORTATION OF CATTLE. {To the Editor of the Daily Times.) Sir,—Saeing that advantage is bei-.g taken in Victoria of the Act now in force allowing stock to be imported from (iipps Land into this Province, I wjuld respectfully suggest the necessity of our Government appointing two inspectors, one at Port Chalmers, the other at the port of shipment in Gipps'land ; all cattle shipped for Otago to pass under his inspection before shipment; and' no cattl* to be allowed within the Province without first having passed under the inspection of the Gipps Lanl iuspoctor, and bearing his certificate of soundness, condition, whether fat or store, male or female, •fee , &.c,; sucli certificate to be produced for the inspection of the' Port Chalmers inspector before the cattle are allowed to be landed. By this means it would be almost impossible for diseased cattle to be imported into the Province, and would place the G-ovrtrument in possession of much valuable information as to the actual numbers shipped, the losses on the voyaj", actual number landed, and from those returns what the extent of tlie trade is likely to come to. Your obedient servant, Spectator.

(To the Editor,of the Otago Daily Times.) Sir,—Have th'; goodness to give this explanation a place in your first issue. I have complied this time, I thiiik, with nil your rules. I rind that niy friends, the trustees, have not had any had rneaniiiir in the decision to whicli they have come, and that they regard my remarks and "strictures as iiriputinsr ba I motives, and a design to frustrate the action of the <;hureh. With all my seventy, £ .lid'not mean to accuse the trustees of ba! motive?. I maant to attack the action, rather than the actors ; and if I have unduly confounded action and a-jtor, I am sorry for so doinjr Notwithstanding »U that I Inve feit and sai-l, I do Oil eve that the trustees acted for what they thought the b*st .coo lof the church. I have always regardtd them, individually, a? the churcii's friends, and as my own persona! friends, and I am willing to believe tnat tli«y ha.l no idea of inflicting on .me the pain and relation, and annoy nice, which thjir action—of which icoinphiu—has caused me. The evil of the whole lies in the circumstances. It is right to acknowledge, aud I hereby frauKly do acknowledge that tor tnese circuroafcauees they were not altogether to bla-ne. \oa. I do believe, that with many ot them they were altogether unacquainted, and ot curse for these they were not at all to blara;. TOl3 acknowledgment Udua t> thim aid it is honestly jnade. Pressed as I w;r, into a corner, Jiey may, on the whole, feel thankful that the spirit that burned in my w-r.ls was only scalding and not boiling. I h.ive had an opportuuitv of cons Itin" •vita-som* members of Pr.-sl.ytury, and havo resolved w r-turn from Auc.khnd and wait the decision of the i resbytsry. Had I enjoyed this opfjortuaity sooner this matter would never have app^arel b.-fore the public at all. It is the first time tor nine years that 1 have bronffht church matters b3fore the public, and I \vou»d nob have done so novr had I nor, hay« been I'itt t-.> flounder among sho*U and ice. I ''o trust that ■i- way niay y«t be found for the 'estahlishai-jnt of paaoe and confi.ieuwe in the church. The delay in cornmjr to tli-nr dsji<i>a lias in ray opinion b.jen the {jnat mistake committed by the l'ra-tsjs.
