ORIGINAL CORRESPONDENCE.
THE PRINCE OF WALES' BIRTHDAY.
(2'o the Editor ofthe Otago Daily Times.) Sir, —Three days have elapsed since my last commumcationto you out he above subject. Alreadvweare at the oth of the month, and vet nothing has been done towards celebrating the auspicious event by a general hpnday. The subject is in evervbodv's mouth, but no action appears to be taken in the matter. I have made enquiries from several Government employe*, but can learn nothing as to the intentious of our heads of departments. I really cannot understand su;h ay-nthy, and should riot like to attribute it t, disloyal'y ; but if the Government are ignorant cf the duty they owe to their Sovereign. I think it is time they were made acquainted with it, and a deputation of some of our leading citizens should wait upon them forthwith for the purpose. Pray aid us with your powerful pen, and receive the thanks of Your obedient Servant, A LOYAL SUBJECT.
THE ALLEGED ILLTREATMENT OF A FEMALE LUNATIC. {To the Editor of the Otago Daily Times.) Sir—l observe in your is«ue of this day that you have received an anonymous letter respecting sJme illtreatment of a fetn.-de lunatic. If any person should see a lunatic illused by any of the attendant*, he would be conferring a public benefit by informing the authorities thereof, and appearing to substantiate the charge. Edward Hulme, M.D., &c. Provincial Surgeon. Dunedin Hospital, November sth, 18G2. BELL HILL WORKS. {To the Editor of the Daily Times.) Sir,—Allow me to remark with respect to the Government works on Bell Hill and around town, that besides being an improvement to tho town their object is temporarily to relieve those who-e funds will notenab'e them to betake themselves to the diggings, or are out of employment. Now, I think it would benefit both parties more, i;', instead of paying the men alike 5s per day, they were paid according to ability, say ss, 6s, and 7s ; then there would be some inducement for them to deserve ty. 3 higher rates of wages, besides they would the sooner be able to set about other and more profitable employment. It does not. require a great deal of calculation to discover a mighty difference between the Government works and that now being done in the Cutting, taking into account the number employed on each. I am, Sir, Yours, &c, Work. Dunedin, November sth, 1862.
