WELLINGTON.

(From the Independent.) The present period is usually the dullest season of the year owing to its just preceding the arrival of the new wool clip from the country districts. Trade is, however, in a nealthy condition though the prices rule low, and ere the lapse' of another month it may reasonably be expected that former rates will be realized. At present the market is full of goods, and a general desire to effect pales is shown.

On Monday last, Messrs Bethune and Hunter sold by public auction, at the Exchange, a quantity of eastern produce, oilmen's stores, kc. There was a good attendance of the trale and general buyers; but the prices realised exhibitsd a decline on our former quotations. AbontlStons of Mauritius sugar were disposed of. Low qualities fetched from L39 to L44 per ton ; chrystals, from L46 to Lsl per ton ; 40 boxes tea sold at 27s per box • Coleman's mustard, Is per lb; starch, s£d to Od; blue, lldtols; Melbourne mould candles, B£d per lb ; washing soda, L8 per ton. About 20cwt of Cavendish tobacco was offered, but the bidding not being satisfactory, the lot was withdrawn.

gs|On Tuesday last, Messrs Duncan and Vennell sold by public auction, at their stores, a quantity of merchandise, which realised the following prices : - Mauritius sugar from L35 to 137 5s per ton ; blucher boots^ 5s 6d to 6s per pair; cashmere boots, 7s do; window glass, 25s per box; jams, 22s per dozen; Scotch twill shirts, 23s to 29s per dozen ; Orlando Jones' starch, scl per lb; French twill shirts, ls per yard.
