October 23,] Business has considerably improved since the Pastoral and Agricultural Show, held ou the 22nd instant. Several large transactions have taken place. There is a good demand for well-bred ewes, and with jthe late rise in the Australian markets, we do not anticipate that prices will be lower until importations again take place. Two-tooth ewes are much sought after, and would readily command high prices. Ewes of mixed ages, none broken mouthed. ; We report the sale of 2000, deliverable south ofthe TRa,ngitata, at 31s. per head after shearing ; we have, also, an offer for between 2000 and 3000 more at the same price.
Wethers. —Our butchers are gradually making their purchases for delivery after shearing. We Suote a sale of 500 wethers, from four-tooth'upwards, eliverable after shearing on the Ashburton at 25s per head. There are one or two purchasers for wethers deliverable on the Waitaki, from Otago, in 1 1 market, but the high prices ruling there have in great measure caused sellers to expect rates ithat barely leave a margin for the dealer, consequently buyers are holding off. Store Wethers.—We are still prepared to supply considerable quantities from the Wellington province, but have few enquiries. Working Bullocks,—We beg to advise a sale of eleven good working bullocks for the sum of L2OO. ■ Fat Cattle are s.-arce, and would be readily saleable at 40s per 100 lbs. Store Cattle.—The demand is active, and we hear there are very few lots of Canterbury or Nelson cattle which remain to be brought into the market. We quote from L9 tb Lll per head for fair well-bred a
Station Property.—We have had several enquiries during tiie week for sheep runs, and'report the'sale cf 13,000 acres near Timaru, without improvements, for L1,500 —-Lyttelton Times.
By way of Sydney we have news from Rio Janeiro to July 25. The Government of the Argenfine Republic has laid before the Chambers a bill for bringing into operation throughout the whole of the Argentine Confederation the Customs law and tariffs of vahialion, which previously existed in the Province of Buenos Ayres alone. The bill will apply also to tbe additional duties imposed upon imports and exports in this province. It is proposed that the bill should become law upon the 18th of October next. The revenue derived from the Customs duties will be applied exclusively to the redemption of the public debt and paper money. In any case, a portion of the produce of the ordinary duties would be specially applied to the payment of the coupons of the foreign debt, contracted by virtue of the treaties of August 25,1858.
