As previously reported by the steamer Geelong, the Canterbury had to stand off Oamaru for two days, during the swell which proved so disastrous to the Star of Tasmania. Even outside, she encountered a very heavy cross sea, which, made a clean breach over her, and for the safety of the vessel, and of the lives and cargo on board of her, it was found necessary to throw overboard a quantity of iron which formed her deck cargo. The Geelong returned from Lyttelton on Saturday evening, having left on Thursday evening, and called at all the intervening ports. At the time of her departure, there was no appearance of the Wonga Wonga, from Wellington. At Oamaru, at attempt had been made to float the schooner Star of Tasmania, the owner having gone down there with men and appliances for the purpose, but after she was down as far as low-water mark, she was again driven up on the beach by a fresh sea, whirh set in when the work was so far completed. On the first occasion she was driven on the beach an extraordinary distance, the swell being heavier than has ever been seen at Oamaru; but, though she went up with all her cargo in her, she sustained comparatively little damage. The ship Nelson, Captain Meiklejohn from Greenock, arrived at Port Chalmers last evening, after a voyage of 96 days, with 229 passengers and general cargo. The Nelson left Greenock on the 6th May, Captain Meiklejohn reports having, on the 12th May, in lat. 41 N., long. 14 W., seen the barque Benin from Liverpool; and the Wave of Life, ship, from London to Melbourne. On the 30th May, in lat. 4.30 N., long. 25 W., saw the American ship Alain, from ----- to Falmouth; and in lat. 16 S., long. 36 W., saw the barque Corocoro, from Liverpool to Coquimbo. The Nelson experienced very unsettled weather, during the voyage from Greenock to this port. She made the land on the 91st day out. There have been two births on the voyage, —no deaths or sickness. Four other vessels left for Otago at the same time as the Nelson, but were not seen or spoken afterwards.
