THE NORTHERN GOLD FIELDS.

The Coromandel Dignings have not as yet attracted that population which Mr. Graham anticipated. The news, to our thinking, is not very promising but t.iere 13 an evident disposition on the part of the whole of the Auckland press to make the most of it. Tne Avcklmvler of the 29th ult. *ajs :— " We have had communications from several persons interested in the Gold Quartz Keef mines of Coromandel, whose statements are entitled to credit, and the accounts are uniformly encouraging; all parties engaged have the fullest confidence in the ultimate success of their labours, and look forward to rapid fortunes when the necessary machinery is once put in motion. Several specimens of various reefs have b:-en obtained, which contain gold visible to the naked eye, and a gentlem:in expe-ienced in quartz mining in California, informed us that he id of opinion they are the richest reefs ever discovered. Some very rich nugget* have lately been found, and we have seen a gentleman who knows the person who found the solid gold nu^et weighing 6 lbs. As this was found by a person prospecting in a new place, referred to in one of our contemporaries, the exact locality ia kept a secret. From what has alreadw been found, we think there is every prospect of rich alluvial di<»ginga being discovered when the weather will permit a thorough prospecting of the country round."
