Mr. Hoskins, one of the lessees of the Theatre Royal, nt Ballarat, has been playing in a part without rehearsal, and one whicli we thing he might just as well have let alone. The Ballarat Tribune, of Wednesday, tells its own tale :—A fracas occurred yesterday in Slurtrstreet, arising out of a ruffianly attack made upon the editor of this journal. He was proceeding up Lydiard-stroet, and when near the Bank of Australasia, was assailed by Mr. Hoskins. of the Theatre Royal, who, it appears, felt himself aggrieved in consequence of an allusion made in a Liter publi-hed in this paper, to an apartment in the theatie, which formed thu resort ofthe abandoned women of the town. The assailant, a.roan of about twice the stature and weight of his opponct succeeded in inflicting a out on his face, with a whip he held in bis hand, when he \.as eloped with, and his head put in the unpleasant position known as " Chancery." Deprived of any further opportunity of using his whip, he was suffering the penalty of his temerity, when his friend Major Wallace disgracefully interfered, and reli-vcd him from his difficulties by interposingl between tho combatants, and dragging the baffled ruffian away. The Tribune also says : — Mr. Honkins, addressing the audience at the Theatre Royal in the evening, had the audacity to reiterate the statements uttered by him, with reference to the Editor of this journal, which we lately contradicted. Now, as then, we repeat that they are " impudent falsehoods," disgraceful in the first instance, and doubly so now.g . .
