Sir,—l was much pleased by the remarks contained in a letter which appeared in yesterday's issue of your paper, on tiie subject of prospecting, am] heartily concur with the opinions expressed by-the.writer ; but as all ■ former experience goes to prove that nothing whatever can be expected.from the Government, I' should recommend the. inhabitants of JDunedin and the neighbourhood to take the matter into their own hands, and themselves organise prospecting parties. I am sure that if mercantile in:n and others reflect oil tlie infinite advantages t!n;v would derive from the discovery of. new payable guld-lields," they would not grudge the. comparatively small amount requisite to tic out those parties with provisions and tools. • : . . . • It is evident that if something new does not turn upliefore winter fairly sets in, business will be almost at a stand still here, and failures of frequent occurrence. . Under these cirenmstances it certainly does seem extraordinary that those most deeply interested show so!much supinene^s on the. subject of prospecting; however, " better late than never," and if some of the leading men of the town call a meeting, and opon a subscription list, I have no doubt that numbers wi! 1 come forward liberally with their assistance, knowing that in so doing they are taking the moat effectual means to further their own interests and those of the flmnnmnita
