S'rniKiKa Tin jitkeh.—The Duke of Bridgewator iras very fond of watching bis men at work, especially when any new enterprise was on loot. Wlien tliey wero boring for conl at Worsley, the Duke came every morning aild looked on for a long lime toffether. The men did not like to leave off work whilst heremnined there, and they he. came so dissatisfird at having to work so long: behind the hour at which the bell ranjr, that Brindley had some difficulty in frettinp- a sufficient number of hands to continue the boviug. On inquiry, lit found out the cause, and communicated it to ti'ie Duke, who from that time made a point of immediately walking oft" when the bell rang, returning when tiie men liad resumed work, mid rininiucd with them usually until six o'clock. He observed, however, that though the men dropped work promptly as the bell ransr, when he was not by, they were not nearly so punctual in resuming work, some stragglingin many minutes after i\ii\i. lie asked to know the reason," and the men's excuse was, that they could always hear the clock w'jen it struck twelve, they could not so readily hear it-when it struck only one. On this, the Duke had the mechanism of the clock altered so as to make it strike " thirteen" at one o'clock, which it continues to do'until this day.
