Popotuna Police Station, January 22nd, 1862.

Mounted Constable Bayly reports for the information of the Commissioner of' Police, Dunedin, that hs visited the locality of the reported diggings at the Waipahi Gorges on the 521 st instant. There are 16 miners on the ground, five of whom are the prospecting party who have been working in the gully for the last three week>, and state that the average day's work has been about 8 dwts., sinking from one"to three feet, on slaty bottom ; vein ot gold about six feet wide, whole length of gully, about half a mile. Constable Bayly saw 8 dwts. 4 grs. of coarse shutty gold weighed whilst there the proceeds of 153 buckets of wa<h dirt. The remaining eleven ai-e a party that have been prospecting on the Pomahaka and in the neighborhood of the Umbrella Mountains P>r the last two months. This part}' arrived nt the Waipahi on Sunday last, and state that they intend leaving on Thursday, the 29th .instant if nothing better is discovered by that date. In conclusion Constable Bayly begs to state that the place where the miners are working is four miles from Mr. Tesehmalcer's station, thirteen from PopoUtnua. No wood nearer than ten miles. . :
