Monday, 11th Nov. The proceedings on. Monday began by Mr. Reynolds moving—"That this Council would recommend the Government, in the event of their being able to make proper arrangements with the Bank of New Zealand, that the public accounts be kept with that bank ;" which motion he afterwards withdrew in favour of ?in amendment moved by Mr. Dick, to the effect that tenders stating the terms on which the} r would lend money, and the interest they would give on deposits, should be called for from the various banks, which was carried on j division—ayes, 12; noes, 8. i The House then went into Committee to j consider the appointment of an Auditor and Deputy Auditor, when Mr. Reynolds proposed Mr John M*Glashan as a fit and proper-person to fill the former office ; but Mr. Cutten having stated that, his Honor the Superintendent would refuse to concur in that gentleman's appointment, the motion was negatived without a division. Mr. Walk Ea having proposed Mr. Kettle as Auditor, his name was rejected on a division, by 11-to 5; and the following motion of Mr.M'MASTEE's was agreed to, viz.,—"That as there was no-probability of the Superintendent and the Council agreeing in the nomination of an Auditor and Deputy Auditor, this House is of opinion that the appointment should be left to the General Government."
The House then resumed, and the resolution of the having been reported to it, and its adoption having been moved, pro forma, it was unanimously negatived; thus leaving the matter in exactly the same position it was in before the debate, which occupied between two and three hours. The House then went into Committee of supply, when several items of the supplementary estimates were agreed to —a division taking place on the question, whether the sum for the improvement of the Waihola Lake should be £100 or £200. The former amount was carried by 11 to 2.
The following resolutions were then agreed to, and the House adjourned : — Ist. One authorising the Superintendent to expend 40 per cent, in excess of the vote in order to build the public buildings of stone instead of wood.
2nd. One authorising to advance such sums as may be necessary to pay the expenses of the Military; subject to an appeal to General Government against the Province being made liable for these expenses.
