WELLINGTON. February 3. The export of gold from New Zealand for the last month was 35,96507, valued at £145.854, a decrease of 23,10 t0/, valued at £85,654 compared with the return for the corresponding month of last year. The quantity of silver exported last month was 44,4260z, of the value of £4427, as compared with 111,2070z valued at £11,21j in January, 1908. The criminal sessions of the Supreme Court commenced to-day before Mr Justice Cooper. In charging the grand jury his Honor said he regretted that there was aconsiderable business to transact. There were 37 charges against 18 different persons ; many of the cases came from the country districts, still it was to be regretted that the calendar was larger than usual in' Wellington, and offences which were charged against the respective persons were, for the most part, of a serious nature. There were a number of cases of housebreaking, assault and robbery ami highway robbery, indicating the presence of a number of undesirable people. George Woodley. a youth, on two charges of forgery at ralmerston, was sentenced to 12 months' imprisonment, with provision Unit lie may be removed to an industrial school; Frederick XV. Sanderson, for theft from a, dwelling at Waverley,_ received two years' imprisonment; Win. G. Blum, breaking and entering, five years'. • Augustus Baggarlay appeared at the Police Court this morning on a charge ot using behavior whereby a breach of the peace was occasioned. The evidence showed that accused lived with his wife at Carterton, but owing to a diflerence with him .bis wife came to Wellington, where accused followed her and met her in Sydney street, accompanied by her brother and sister. The brother threatened to strike Baggarlay, and the latter drew a loaded revolver and: threatened to shoot him and take his own iife. Counsel for accused said the dispute had been iixed up and the parties intended to live together again. A tine of 20s was imposed, and accused was bound over to keep the peace towards his brother-in-law lor six months. DUNKIJIX. Fei : nary 3. At the Arbitration Court t'.:':.-; morning, Helmkev and Sons, pastrycooks, were fined £5 and costs for employing a nonnnionist. For employing without a- permit an apprentice who had not completed his indentures Telford Weir (tailor) was fined £2 and costs. D. Samuel (employer) and Joseph Ayers (employee) were fined £2 and £1 respectively for a breach of the bakers' award. Ayers was paid 45s weekly as second hand instead of 50s. T. Fogo (painter),'for exceeding his limit in the number of apprentices, was lined £o and costs. LYTTKLTON. February 3. Additional prizes: Dairy cow producing most butter fat, C. G. C. Dermer first. The points prize for dairy cattle was won by S. R. Lancaster, and the special prize for dairy cow and heifer by James Hod gen. NELSON. February 3. The police received news this morning t hat a man named Macdonald-, supposed to bo employed on the railway extension works, jumped out of a window of a hotel or accommodation house in Motucka, Valley and picked up a piece of gloss with which lie cut his throat. He was brought to town, and Dr Hudson thinks he may recover. The exact locality of the attempted suicide and further details are not yet known.
