THE LINDSAY MEMORIAL.
Responding to a meeting called by the Oiimaru North School Committee, a number of ladies and gentlemen met at the North School last evening for the purpose of taking into consideration the best means of perpetuating the memory of the late Mr James Lindsay. Those present •were:—-Misses Thompson, J. Lindsay, K. Kibblewhite, Crawshaw, and Robertson, and Messrs K. Milligan, James Mitchell, 11. C. Young, W. G. Alexander, S. Mollison. A. Meldrum, J. 15. Grave, T. Jones, R. Rusbatch, A. Stock, D. Herron, N. Meldrum. W. P. Meldrum, G. S. Jones, J. M'Laren, i». Mackenzie, W. A. Service, J. Marwick, T. Begg, "W. Amies, and W. Begg. Mr James Mitchell (Chairman of thtTCommittee) presided. Mr .Mitchell said that action had been taken consequent on receipt of a letter (already published) from -Mr Robert Milliuau. an ex-pupil. The School Committee considered Mr Milligan's letter and unanimously resolved to call the present meeting of" teachers, ex-teachers, pupils, and ex-pupils of the school, for the purnose of considering the best means of success. He had received a letter from Mr (l. 1). Flamank, an old teacher of the school, in which he (Mr Flamanck) had intimated his sympathy with the proposal and slated that he "would like to contribute his mite. Mr Thomas Regg had also intimated that he would like to be afforded an opportunity of joining in anything that might be decided upon. Speaking for himself, the Chairman said the obie.:t had his heartiest sympathy, and he had u.i doubt that they would be able to <lo something worthy and something well fitted to perpetuate"the memory of their late headmaster.
Mr U. Milligan said he would like to sav, on behalf of the ex-pupils present and unable io be present, that whatever the meeting decided they would fall in with, and "they would do all in their power to bring it to a successful issue. It had occurred to many that the form suggested would probably be the best. A nice tablet lould be obtained, and that seemed to him rather a nice form of ]>erpotuating the memory of one so closely allied in the school as Mr Lindsay was. Something in addition might be got, say a photograph in oil, which could be hung in the school. Mr Milligan said he felt sure that the whole of the committee of the school, and all who had been connected with the school, would do their best to further the object. Mr X. Meldrum said he thought everybody was agreed as io what should be done, and the best thing to do now was to agree as to how the object was to be attained. He thought the best thing to do in the meantime would be to set up a Committee. There were so many generations connected with the school that a large committee might be necessary. Perhaps Mr Service would intimate the matter to the children, who would bring along their contributions, and past pupils might be circularised.
The Chairman invited a resolution affirming the idea.
Mr W. Meldrum moved : "That it is desirable that the meniory of the late Mr James Lindsay, for oO years head master of the Oamaru North School, should be perpetuated in a suitable manner."
The motion was seconded by -Mr W. G. Alexander, and carried unanimously. Mr Milligan moved: "That the memorial take the form of a tablet and an oil painting of the lato Mr Lindsay."
Mr J. B. Grave seconded the motia.i, which was spoken to approvingly by many present. and carried unanimously. On the motion of Mr Milligan, seconded bv Mr R. C. Y'oung. it was agreed that nil present- form themselves into i ammittee. with power to add to their number, for the purpose of giving effect to the proposal. Mr James Mitchell was appointed chairman of the committee and .Messrs W. A. Service and W. F. -Meldrum joint secretaries. Mr Thomas Jones was appointed treasurer.
The meeting then resolved itself into a meeting of the committee, when it was resolved that Misses Thompson. Lindsay, and Crawshaw, and Messrs M'Laren (convener), Alexander, llerron, and Stock be a sub-conmiittee for ihe purpose of perusing the old school rolls. Misses Thompson, Kibblewhite, and Robertson, ai-d Messrs Mitchell (convener), Milligan. Alexander, and T. Begg were appointed a sub-committee to obtaui information in reference to tablet and oil painting. The joint secretaries were empowered to have a circular and lists printed, and it -.vt-s decided to commence collecting as soon as lists were ready. It was also dc-c.de-I to add to the committee Messrs .1. Fitzgerald and 0. D. Flamank. former teachers, and Messrs W. Scott and S. George, old Dunedin pupils of Mr Lindsay.
