OAMARU BOATING CLUB.
LADIES' DAY. Beautiful weather and much enthusiasm were the elements which predominated yesterday afternoon for the annual carnival of the Oamaru Boating Club. As was anticipated, there was a very large attendance of the public, and it is seldom that the wharves and foreshore present such an animated appearance. A firstclass programme had been arranged, and the various acouatic events were watched with keen interest. Especially was this so with regard to the final of the President's Fours, with which the afternoons sport opened. Smith's crew, which had been rowing in good form all through the heats, won the event by three-quarters ot a length in a competition with Ireland s crew. Both crews started well together, but on reaching the rough water Ireland's combination suffered, and the crew lost considerable water, which was not wholly made up by the capital sprint to which' they lent themselves towards the finish. Smith, with a different crew, won the teams fours later on in the afternoon.
Dr M'Adam, the club's patron, was present at the function, and opened the proceedings with a neat speech. Dr M'Adam extended a cordial welcome to the visitors, and said he trusted that each would receive a full measure of enjoyment. He complimented the club on their successes at the recent Port Chalmers regatta, which lie took as an indication that further wins awaited the Oamaru Boating Club this season. Cheers were called for Dr M'Adam and the ladies, and were heartily given. The sports were capably controlled by the club's officials. Captain Ireland acted as superintendent, Messrs Grant and Williams as starters for the swimming events, and Mr C. Brown for the rowing events. Mr W. Wilson controlled the secretarial arrangements. Afternoon tea, for which a small charge was made, was provided "by the lady friends of the club and much enjoyed. As a result, the new boat find will benefit to the extent of about £6.
