NARROW ESCAPE OF THE SOUTHERN TRAIN
(by telegraph. ) Dunedin, November 24,
As the Oamaru train, due in town at 12.45 to-day, was nearing the Port Chalmers quarry, a heavy blast was fired, which dislodged a lump of stone estimated at somewhere about ten tons. This mass came rolling down on to the line, tearing up some of the rails and sleepers. A quarryman had just time to give warning to the approaching train of the danger ahead. If the train had been two minutes in advance of time, the stone wquld probably have desended on top of it. After a detention of one hour and a half the line was cleared, and the train proceeded to Dunedin, the passengers having walked to the lower station.
