SPORTING.
THE DUNTROON RACES. (from our special reporter. ) Duntroon, October 14. The annual race meeting of the Waitaki Jockey Club was commenced to-day on the Duntroon course. Notwithstanding a steady downpour of rain there was a good attendance of spectators, and a large number more are at present arriving by the train, which reached Duntroon at half-past twelve o'clock. The usual, number of games of chance are on the ground. The rain considerably militated against the enjoyment of the sport. The stewards are, however, working hard to make things go pleasantly. An awning has been erected over the stand, but the rain soon found way through the covering, and one might as well have been outside. The proceedings opened with
Maiden Plate of 25 Sqvs. ; 1J Mile. Mr. W. Maitland's Ned Kelly, 7st 41b ... 1 Mr. A. Gunn's Magician, sst 91b ... 2 Mr. E. Lefevre's Honest Jack, 9st 31b ... 3 Betting 2 to 1 on the field, bar Pilotfish. The six horses on the card came to the post, and Pilotfish was made a hot favorite. At the start Sultana jumped off with the lead, closely followed by Magician. ■ Ned Kelly direchly afterwards came up, and a desperate race took place between the outlaw and Magician, the former winning by a- bare head. Both jockeys riding splendidly. Waitaki County Plate or 35 Sovs. 1J Mile. Mr T. C. Hill's Unknown, lOst ... ... 1 Mr J. Gibson's Blue Peter, 9st 10£lb ... 2 Mr A. Gunn's Magician 3 All on the card started for the County Plate. Blue Peter went away with the lead, with Unknown second, and Honest Jack third. At the back of the stand Unknown assumed the lead, with Blue Peter in the seoond place, and Shillelagh in the third, Honest Jack being last. Coming into the straight, Magician put on a spurt and came in a good third. Waitaki Cup of 100 Sovs.; 2 Miles, Mr F. Shaw's Adamant, 7st 101b ... 1 Mr R. Mason's Rand wick, 7st alh ... 2 Mr H. Goodman's Tera, 6st 101b ... 3 York was scratched.
: A bad start was made, Adamant getting away with a good lead, but he was soon overhauled by Emerald. ' Opposite the stand the five horses were in a cluster, but on coming into Randwick went to the front hard held. Tera .lay seoond, and Emerald third. These positions were maintained until opposite the stand, when Adamant went to the front and won a good race. Randwick Was close up,, and Tera was third. This was a very exciting race. It was the of many that had Randwick been ridden as he should have been he would have won the race.
