WAITAKI COUNTY COUNCIL.
The following is the conclusion of our report of yesterday's meeting of the County Council:—■ The Inspector of Works (Mr. Barron) reported as follows upon the various roads in the County : The Port Moeraki road is getting very much out of repair through subsidence, and as the circumstances are rather exceptional. I should like to be informed whether tho surface contractor is to be held to the. specifications in his contract. The contracts at Maheno and KalcannS Mouth are almost finished. The contracts for metal on the Beaeh-mdl and near Windsor are in progress. As there is a considerable amount of traffic in stone on the Dunedin-road, I would! recommend that during the summer a supply of maintenance metal be laid down between Totara and Waiareka Junction—My from 1500 to 2000 cubic yards. Tho road is getting cut up, and there is no metal to repair it. I would further suggest that the road in Awamoko Riding, leading from Marshall's hut down the creek, be formed. There is a large area under crop, the grain from which will pass over this road next season, and several farmers are anxious that it should bo made.
I would also recommend that tho main road west of Duntvoon be laid off in its: proper position. The new railway works; have taken away a portion of the old road,, and in the meantime a temporary siding has: been made by the surfaceman. The footbridge over the Maorewhenua River at the Nunnery is nearly finished The course of the stream having been widened by the last flood, two extra spans measuring 40ft. have been added to this structure, and platform approaches made at both ends of it. The road formation on the Kurow block has been completed, and the gravelling at Doxtors Creek is nearly so. As I think the footbridges over the Otematakau River could he utilised- by shifting the smaller one, and making an addition c£ : two spans to it, I would recommend tie matter to he brought before the Council. The Council dealt with the several matters as follows :—l. That tho surfaco contractor adhere to the specifications of; his contract re Port Moeraki road. It. may be mentioned that the circumstances attaching to this contract are exceptional, from the peculiar subsidence of the soil at intervals. 2. Th© question of supplying maintenance metal on the Dunodin road between Totara and Waiareka Junction wag, ordered to stand over lor a mootk 3. The question of permanently layiag off the main road west of Puntrooa was postponed, pending fin,a,l fixing of position of railway line. 4 The Engineers will propare plans fojf moving the smaller footbridge oveif-the O.tematakau river, and for making addition, of two spans. Engineers reported upon the proposed bridge over the Ohau as follows Proposed Bridge over the Ohau.—Wa have had survey made of best site for this, and find that a suspension bridge for foot traffic would cost L2BO. f The span would be 127 feet. As the residents in the neighborhood represented that a bridge for dray traffic was the kind by them, we find that such, i£ designed as a suspension bridge, would cost LBsoj but if it be made a truss* bridge the cost would be LOGO* Thalatter would be much preferable to tha former, as the suspension bridge wouM require a deeply cut approach through solid rock at one and it is just possible that the blasting required tor that might injuriously affect those portions intended tor the anchoring. On the motion of Mr. Duncan, it W3S decided to send a copy of the report to |the Geraldine County Council, a sking« they would share in the expense of either work. . The thaoia of the Council wer® tenured to Mr, S. E. Shrimski, M.B.R-, for having sent them maps showing the propose electoral districts. _ . ! It was resolved that, until notice to too contrary, the w>nthly meeting of w* Waitaki Qaunty Council be held in future ion the second Friday of each month. I The surfacemen in Papakaio and Awa~ njoko Ridings were appointed rangers 10 those ridings respectively. It was resolved that tho Engineers appoint an inspector to superintend t construction of a concrete pier bridge a Livingstone. . The Engineers and Mr. Duncan appointed to inspect the road through. • Fra,aer*s land at Peebles to gravel' rese » jaad that an offer be made to Mr. JK for the Council to fence the road-line. The Inspector of Works was instruc to ascertain if it would ba advisao 0 move a portion, of th© old bridge Livingstone in order to utilise same . %outh. branch on the Maerewhenua on road to Naseby. , A list of the quarry, gravel, and reserves ia the County, was laid upo tabJe by the Clerk. . , iy r I It was resolved, on the motion 0 - Murcott, seconded by Mr. Duncan, __ the Engineer be requested to pwF" plaiaa of all quarry, shingle, a,na reserves within the County ; and t Clerk, on behalf of the Oouncft.' 1 1 the Governor by Order in Council g, the management of tho said r ... under the control of th^fijoimoil; however, to Borough, Councils SB Boards being; sjlpwfld to "V , therefrom \or t the use of, jj g id Aqqowta to the amount ofi L 7« EoaQ.
