WRECK OF THE STEAMER RANGATIRA.

(®Y TBItEGEAPH.) ISTijw Plymouth, September 7. At 3 o'clock this morning the steamer Rangatira, while on her'passage from the Manukau to this port, ran ashore near Bell Block, and became a total wreck o.n a reef known as Pepperil's Fishing Nook. The place lies about four miles to the north of New •Plymouth and two miles from the Waitara. The cause of her making that point is supposed to be some evasion'of duty on the'part of the men on the watch, no alarm of danger bping given till the stp.ajner was fairly or the reef. There pight passengers on board. It was a bpautiful night, and there was no excuse for them to run ashore $o far from the port she was leaking.- The passengers and mails have just been brought into town.
