WELLINGTON.

August 27.

The following regulations for the public prisons of the colony, under the Prison Act 1873, as to the Jewish Sabbath, &c., appear in the Gazette :—Any person who is a Jew is not to be compelled to labor on his Sabbath or on any of the following sacred festivals :—New Year festival (two days), Day of Atonement (one day), Feast of Tabernacles (four days), Passover (four days), Pentecost (two days). It i 3 understood that Government do not intend to interfere with the sentence of two months' hard labor passed on Willis, schoolmaster at the Lower Hutt, for assault on Jordon.

DUNEDIN.

August 27.

It is said that Captain Mackenzie will come forward for Waikaia, and that pressure is being brought to bear on Mr. Bastings to stand. Judge Bathgate will retire at the end of the month.

The preliminary investigation into the Jvyeburn murder is not yet over. August 28.

The iuterprovincial football match between Canterbury and Otago was played to-day. Hammersley kicked off for Canterbury, and, after twenty minutes' fast play, Hammerton secured a touch-down for Otago. No goal resulted. Shortly after, an Otago man had to retire hurt. During a third spell, Canterbury secured a touch-down. JTo goal followed.

The Tuapeka Flat Hotel has been totally destroyed by fire. The building was insured in the National for L2OO and the stock in the Norwich Union for LoOO.

The cutter Norval, supposed to be lost off Amuri Bluff during the late gale, has arrived safely at Lyttelton.

HOKITIKA.

August 27. The following telegram was received

from Ross this evening : —" The Wallace s.s. grounded on the North Spit, Okarito, trying to enter in yesterday at 2 o'clock. Probably she will get off on discharging, if the weather is favorable."
