DEATH OF MR. IRELAND, M.H.R.

(FEOM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT).. Wellington, August 16. ■ Mr. George Ireland, member for Waikaia, died yesterday morning from, disease of the heart and lungs. He had been ailing ever since his arrival in Wellington, but attended strictly to his duties. He was in the House for the last time on Friday morning, but, feeling worse than usual, he consulted a doctor, and, in accordance with medical advice, he decided to remain in his lodgings for the remainder of the session. From the time that he retired to his lodgings on Friday evening he grew gradually worse, and died as previously mentioned. He was elected in September last, haying previously been a member of the Provincial Council for his district. He was one of the most conscientious men in the House, and, though Tin obtrusive in his disposition, he was an uncompromising supporter of Liberal principles, and was greatly respected by all with whom he was acquainted. He has no relations in the Colony, although a large number of friends are desirous that his remains should be forwarded to Roxburgh, the town in which he resided for burial. The whole of the expenses of the contest which ended in his return were paid by the people of Roxburgh, principally miners, from whose ranks he was chosen, having left his claim in which he had been working for 18 years to comply with their request to contest the seat in the interests of the Grey party against Captain M'Kenzie, the Conservative candidate. The House adjourned this morning, as anticipated, until evening, in consequence of Mr. Ireland's death, Mr, Ireland's boc]y will be sent by the Hinemoa to Lyttelton, A procession will start from his house at half-past two, the members of the Legislature attending. The Premier, Mr. Macandrew, Sir George Grey, Mr. Fnlfcon, and Mr. Brown all paid nice tributes to the memory of the deceased,
