Mr. Devereaux, who "was AotingGovernor of Fiji during the temporary absence of Sir Arthur Gordon, has been appointed to the permanent Governorship of the Colony. Serious railway accidents have occurred to-day on the Northern and Midland lings. The trains in both cases bent the rails and ran down embankments. Several passengers have been killed, and many seriously injured.

According to the latest news from Afghanistan, General Roberts had ar rived at Sherpur, near Cabul, yesterday, and had ai-ranged to have an interview with the new Ameer, Abdul Rahaman, at an early date. After the same has been held, General Stewart, with the British troops remaining in the neighborhood of Cabul, will retire to Gandamuk.

News comes to hand, via Noumea, that the native King of Tahite has abdicated, and that Tahite has been proclaimed a French Colony. Sailed Zealandia, for Auckland, yesterday.

The Treasurer introduced his Financial Statement in the Legislative Assembly last night, He estimated the revenue for the present year at LI ,633,500, and the expenditure at LI ,690,000. In order to cover the deficit, he proposes to increase the quantity of land to bo sold, and the increase of the export duty on cedar, and import duty on tallow and steavine, and an excise duty on rum to 10s ; various articles in the tariff will, moreover be altered from fixed to ad valorem duties. The anticipated surplus is L 32.500. A sum of L 317,000 is to be transferred from the loan account to the consolidated revenue, leaving the latter in credit. The Treasurer's proposals are generally approved.
