WRECK OF THE SARAH AND MARY.
Christchurch, August 12. A telegram received by Messrs. Black, Davies, and Company, of this city, from the master of the Sarah and Mary, states that that vessel has been totally wrecked on Motuara Island. The Sarah and Mary was from Lyttelton bound to Hokitika.
Wellington, August 13.
From further particulars obtained of the wreck of the Sarah and Mary, it appears that she had bad weather on the Bth inst., which necessitated her seeking shelter under Motuara Island channel. The crew turned in at ten o'clock same night, but an hour later one of the crew called the captain and said the vessel was adrift and near the rocks. A kedge anchor was run out, but the line parted, and an effort was made to set head sails to wear the vessel, but it was unsuccessful. On going aft the cabin was found to be on fire. An attempt was made to extinguish it, but without success, and the crew landed on the island. At daybreak next morning, the crew proceeded to the vessel, whioh was still burning, but were unable to save anything. The fire is supposed to have been caused by the stove which was iu the cabin being knocked over and setting fire to, a tin of' kerosene. The vessel was valued at L3OO, and .vas owned by her master (Captain Foreman). She was insured for L2OO in the Victoria. Her cargo was Colonial produce, and is supposed to be insured.
