POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE.
(from our own correspondent.) Wellington, August 13. There is very little gossip abroad in political circles. Members are utterly sick of the session, which bids fair to be the most barren of the many barren sessions that have taken place in the Colony. Members are talking of returning home, and it will be difficult to keep a quorum in Wellington after the end of the month.
Mr. Pyke's Education Act Amendment Bill provides that in order to extend the benefits of the Act to elementary schools maintained by private bodies or individuals, every school conducted in accordance with the provisions of the Education Act, 1877, and with regulations in respect of qualifications of teachers, course of instruction, attendance at school, and inspection by the Inspeotor of the Board of Education, shall be deemed a public school within the meaning of the Act, and be entitled to receive the same capitation allowance as granted to public schools established under the Act, provided no school shall be entitled to a share of the funds unless the average number of pupils be 25 or more. This would be the means of affording some relief to the Catholics, but there is little hope of the Bill being passed at this late period of the session.
