The Compensation Court has awarded the claimant in the case of Alves and the Corporation, L 1654 costs, making the total award L 4254CHRISTCHURCH. August 12. A man named Elder sustained a fracture of the leg by a sheep running against him in the Papanui sale yards. The body of a man, at present unknown, has been discovered in Stanton River, A Local Industries' Associafciqn is being formed at Ashburton.

Prizes to the amount ofLi3o were paid last night on account of the'recent poultry show. -• At a public meeting at Oust to consider the Counties Act, a resolution was carried that the Governor should not have the power to assume the powers of a County Council where the Counties Act is not in force. It- also passed a resolution censuring Mr. Moorhouse, member for the district, for his inattention to previous resolutions forwarded to him. There have been 383 patients admitted to the Christchurch Hospital during the past half year.. AUCKLAND. August 11. The schooner Amaranth experienced heavy weather on the coast. Off Gable End Foreland the main boom was carried away, and the patent log lost. Next day the gale increased to a hurricane, and the jib was blown to pieces. There were terrific squalls at intervals, a heavy sea was shipped at 2 p.m., and a prodigious wave carried away the steering gear in two pieces, and half filled the cabin and forecastle with water. Hove the ship to at 1 p.m. and rigged the sea anchor to keep her head to sea till the gale moderated. It is feared the recent gales on the coast have played sad havoc among the small trading vessels. Several are already reported missing, and accounts of pieces of wreokage being found are to hand. A quantity of sails and wreckage all smashed up have been seen inside Tukatu Point, between Little and Big Omaha. From this it is apparent that a vessel has been wrecked at that place. Fears are entertained for the safety of the Queen, schooner, which left port last Sunday. A religious monomaniao named John Fuller was arrested at Hamilton. He is under the. belief that he has performed miraculous cures on the sick, and that he ia being persecuted for so doing. He arrived at Auckland in February last from Napier, and has written letters to the Government of New Zealand and Victoria and the Queen, asking for protection. A copy of the letter sent to the Queen was found on him dated from Manawatu.
The Rev. C. H. Schnackenberg, Wesleyan Missionary at Raglan, died on the passage to Auckland, He had been in mission work for 83 years, and was a native of Germany. WESTPORT. August 12. The alterations which were found necessary in the Colliery Company's incline railway were completed yesterday, and a truck of coal was lowered in the presence of shareholders and others. The incline worked without a hitch, and the management expect it to be in full working order in a few days.
