MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
A meeting of the Municipal Council was held last evening, when there were present—His Worship the Mayor, Councillors Otterson, Mainlaxwt, Smith, Roberts, Townsend, and Headland. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, as were also the minutes of two special meetings. The outward correspondence was read and ap--proved.. Mr. John Peattie, Peebles, wrote> giving notice that he required the damage' done by the water race repaired, and; giving particulars of his claim. Tho, writer also stated that Mr. James Burnett required the same.—The letter was ueferred to the Waterworks Committee. A letter waS read from Mr. John M'Combe applying for permission to form a drain across the footpath opposite se<ftion 6 blook 46, Reed-street.—Permission was. granted, glazed pipes to be used* Mr. George Brownlee wrote asking that, the Council take into consideration thenecessity for doing some little repairs to. the footpath near his property in Alnstreet.—The letter was referred to tli& Public Works Gommiitee, with power to. act.

Qamaru, wrote stating that he was the owner and occupier of sections immediately behind the cemetery, aad that he had no means; of getting to, his property.—lt waa re* solved to reply that the property is; outside. the town boundary, and that therefore the Council could not entertain tho request to make the road. Permission was given to Messrs. Fleming and Hedley to transfer the leaso of. section 8, block to Mr. John M'Lean (j of Redcastle,. The Town Clerk of Napier wrote sa&tog' for oertain information with refottWioe ta rates, salaries, and income. Mr. C. G. Moore wrote ibeg to apply for the sum of L 3 8s 4d paid by mo. to Mr. W. G. Filluel,, April 30th last,, as land tax on your sections fronting Thanie3?street, betweoa the right-of-way andi Steward-street." —It was decided to- reply that the Council declined to entertain thft sjequest. Mr. John Robson asked that a small bridge might be plaoedi over the waterrace near Mr. Forrester's fence.—The letter was referred to, the Waterworks. Committee, Mr. Jam,ea Munro, carpenter, wrote drawing attention to the fact that largeatones had been rolled down the hilt-side on to Isis-street, making travelling in thedark extremely unpleasant.—Referred to> the Works Committee. Mr. Pryde, Secretary io, tile Education Board, wrote :—" I &n> requested by th® Education Board to, draw the attention of * the Oaraaru Corporation to the steep cutting in, Arun-atreet, in front of the new school which the Board is erecting for the. south end of the town, and to ask if the Corporation would cut away tn® street to its full width. The Board is prepared to cut away the ground from the street line to the foundations of the school, but this, cannot b® done unlesa the street ia first levelled. Your Committee, in view of taking over the works f rom Messrs. Burt would recommend that their plumber, Thos. M'Cowan, be retained for a short time at his present wages, Ss per <kyIt was resolved that the Acting-Engineer jftonld be instructed to have the camp at papakaio cleared of everything at once, and remove the building 3. The Acting-Engineer reported that in jis opinion a tolerable footpath conld be made across the Ouse-street Lagoon on the north side for L 8 or L 9, bnt he feared that the effect of any partial filling _up of th e lagoon would tend in the direction of increasing the nuisance, which the water nJ ,questionably was on the other side. Councillor Townsend inquired if it would not be better to obtain a flatjottomed boat. It was resolved that two day-men should le pat on for a week to do the work. Accounts to the amount of L 470 16s 5d— including L 385 17s lOd for waterworks. Lf>4 17 7d for ordinary purposes, and L2olßs for gas—were passed for payment. ___
