THE WATERWORKS.

Afc the meeting of the Municipal Council last evening, the following report from, the Acting Engineer (Mr. Sandkon) waa read : I have the honor to report on the present state of the Waterworks as follows —. On the Awamoko section all the repairs rendered necessary by the late stoma flood are now completed, and the water- running down to Hall's gully. From Hall's gully to the 11 chain tunnel,, Mr. Flaherty expects to be finished and' have the water down in three weeks from now. On the Landon section from the 11 chain tunnel to the north end of Grant's tunnel, a few days will see everything complete, there only remaining now to be done an inconsiderable amount of trimming and a little tarring to the timber, works. Good progress is being made with cleaning out the bottom of Grant's* tunnel, but owing to the nature oi the,' work and the character of the ro«k the work is necessarily slow, and will probably take ten days or a fortnight yet. It is, however, being pushed on with all possible despatch. From the tunnel to the reservoir thework remaining can be easily overkakoa by the present gang of men in a week tc» ten days. Altogether with favorable weather and should no unforeseen accident occur there is every prospect of having the Waitaki •water into the reservoir in the course of four to five weeks. Mr. Bell will have completed his bex-v ingSj on this section by Monday or Ttieß-* day> and the water from Grant's tunnel may then be laid permanently into tha reservoir, the bottom of the race being st> far all clear. I would beg to recommend that the flood gate at Georgetown, and the Valve Tower Bridge be put in hand with as little delay as possible. The report was adopted, provided that the Acting Engineer is satisfied thatthe> sluioe gates at Georgetown will have tilth effect he anticipates.
