A magisterial inquiry will be held tomorrow into the circumstances connected with the barque Malay recently striking a rock off the entrance to the Heads. The latest official information about Lake Mapourika Diggings is that about GO miners are in the locality, and five parries are on gold. The statements of the miners vary as to the value of the claims, and nothing appears to be trustworthy upon this head. It is believed that a _f.--.irly payable goldfield will be developed. August 4. A severe shock of earthquake was felt here at 3 o'clock this morning. It was the heaviest experienced here for years past. At the Supreme Court, the case of Glimie v. the Corporation, which has occupied two days, has been withdrawn from the jury. An inquiry into the accident to the barque Malay is proceeding. At the meetiug of the Education Board to-day, it was stated that the fund is in such a position that no reduction in salaries would be made before the beginning of the year. 4- motion that the Bible be read in schools was withdrawn,
DUNEDIN. August 3. At a special meeting of the Punedin Chamber of Commerce to-day resolutions were passed condemning the report of the Public Works Commission on the Otago Central Railway. It was resolved to urge thai the portion under construction should be completed and continued as far as Sutton stream. CHRISTCHURCH. AUCKLAND. August 3. A meeting was held to form a New Zealand Alliance (Auckland branch) to promote reform in licensing laws and liquor traffic. A strong Committee was elected. His Worship the Mayor sent a letter of sympathy with the movement, TIMARU, August S. Thirty-three applications for the post of engineer to the Timaru Waterworks have: been received by the Eorough Council,' and will be decided to-morrow. LAWRENCE. August 3. Arthur O'Neill was committed to take his trial at the District Court on August 20th, for fraudulent bankruptcy.
