The Education Board has passed a reapr lntion to the effect that, in consequence of the capitation allowance being the salaries of the teachers would also have to be reduced. The Hinemoa has sailed for Whangarei with six Armed Constabulary and thirtyone settlers. July 31. At the Resident Magistrate's Court, John Doreen was committed for trial for stabbing another man named Campbell. The police reductions commence to-day. Several police stations iji the country districts are done away with. The exhibits received for the Melbourne Exhibition number 325. Dr. Hector leaves for Melbourne in a fortnight. The Exhibition opens on the Ist October. DUNEDIN. July 31. The insurances on the steamer Ino, wrecked at Port Molyneux, are—Hull, LSOO, in the South British, and L 450 in the Victoria 5 cargo, L 250, in the South ; British, j The Waimea railway was opened to-day. ! An excursion train, conveying 100 invitees, left Dunedin. At Gore Mr. Bastings de- j clared the line formally opened. The vital statistics for July give the following figures : —Births, 163 ; deaths, 53 ; marriages, 39. The Customs revenue for July was L28j771. CHBISTCIIUPvOII. July 30. Another meeting of the unemployed was: held this morning, at which some 200 j men were present. The wages paid by the Government were condemned as too low, and a committee was appointed to prepare a petition to Government. The Anna Bella's case was further heard at Lyttelton to-day, and the Resident j Magistrate will, to-morrow, decide whether; there is'sufficient evidence to warrant his ' communicating wjth Government on the subject of re-discharging the whole cargo and holding 9, thorough survey. not yet been done. j A burglary was committed on board the j schooner Dido last night, and L3Q stolen, j in the absence of the master. I July 31. j The body of John Gordon, who has; been missing since July 4, was found at Mount Thomas yesterday. At the request of the solicitor for the seamen, the ship's articles were ordered to be detained to prevent the Anna Bella, which is now loaded, from putting to sea.
AUCKLAND. July 30. At the half-yearly meeting of the Working Men's Club, the report showed the receipts to be L 936. The balance over expenditure is Lll3. The Union Sash and Door Company has declared a dividend of 10 per cent., carrying forward L 3416. . July 31. An alarm of fire in Mr. F. A. White's premises in Shortland-street last night caused a sensation, but turned out, on breaking into the premises, to be only some boiling glue which had caught fire and was blazing up quickly. It was extinguished, and no damage was done.
" HOKITIKA, July 30. Mr. Hunter, storekeeper, of Ross, received a letter from Okarito, saying that several holes have bottomed on payable gold at Manapouriki. From the tone of the letter, prospects are very favorable. At the Resident Magistrate's Court today, J. P. Klein, proprietor of the Star, was charged, on the information of T. Trelor, with libel. Defendant stated that he had no knowledge of the libel before it appeared in that paper, and was prepared, through his counsel, to apologise and pay costs, and give up the name of the writer. The information was then withdrawn. Mr. W- P- Crawford, of the Stamp Office, after a very long illness, died this morning. The bar is in splendid condition. Fourteen feet at high water is reported.

Rees, solicitor, was a passenger yesterday per Ringarooma for Wellington, to attend and give evidence before the Parliamentary Committee relative to the L3OO paid him as retainer for the Waimate natives last session, He will also endeavor to. induce the Government to incorporate in the Native Lands Sales Bill certain provisions contained in his East Coast Land Titles Bill relative to lands recently conveyed in trust.
