A MAN DROWNED.

Captain Stevens, of the Lizzie Guy, which arrived from Hokitika this morning, reports that on the night of the 22nd inst., about half-past 9 o'clock, when about 60 miles abreast of Hokitika, he shipped a sea which washed the mate, Cornelius Laird, overboard. He rounded the vessel to as soon as possible, but could not see anything of him. He laid-to the ship for 24 hours, but not being able to find him, the gale abating, proceeded on the passage. At the time the mate was washed off, there was a very heavy gale blowing from the north-east, and a tremendous sea. Captain Stevens thinks that the poor fellow could not have lived many minutes, as there was such a heavy broken sea running. Cornelius Laird was a native of Scotland, about 37 years of age, and as fine and steady a fellow as ever trod a ship's deck. . -
