BURGLARIES AT TIMARU.
[by telegraph. I Timaetj, .Tuly 4. The Chief Post Office here vras broken \ into last night. One of the telegraphists, sleeping on the premises, saw the reflection of a light in the Post Office, went outside, and met two other persons. He stopped in front oi the building, which is close to the footpath in the Main South. Road, while the other two went behind. The burglar jumped through ono of the front windows by which he had effected an entrance by smashing it in, and; escaped, though the telegraphist gave ohase. On examing the room, a number of blacksmith's tools were found. Theburglar had unsuccessfully attempted to. break open the safo by knocking off the handle, and breaking in the lock. Ho had also rummaged several drawers, but found only a few coppers in them. The night was; a y-ery- dark and boisterous one. The culprit is not yet arrested. An unsuccessful attempt was also made last night to breEyk into Hullenstein'a drapery shop on the Main South Road, A pane of glass in the window at the back of tl\a. premises had been brokon, aixd thocatch unfastened, but ingress was prevented by some iron bars whioh are fixed, inside the window.
