A scene occurred in the Ash burton Resident Magistrate's Court on SYiday, Mr. Purnell, solicitor for the plaintiff in a, civil case, objected to Mr. O'Reilly, the defendant's solicitor, being hoard. Mr. Guinness, R.M., ordered Mr. Purnell to sit down, but the latter refused to do so, and when told he would be committed for contempt if he did not sit down, Mr. Purnell replied that it would not be the first illegal act done in that Court. He again repeated his refusal to sit down, and was committed to seven days' imprisonment for contempt. Subsequently Mr. Puvnell's friends induced the Magistrate to accept an apology, when Mr. Purnell. was liberated.
