THE GLOBE HOTEL.

On Saturday last we had the pleasure of inspecting one of the recent additions to the many handsome stone buildings for . which our town is become celebrated. We allude to the Globe Hotel, at the corner of Thames and Coquet streets, which has been erected by our wellknown and entirprising fellow-townsman, Mr. W. Maitland. The principal portion is finished, and will be opened in a few days. At present it has a frontage of 66ft to Thames-street and 70ft to Coquetstreet, which latter, when completed, will measure ilOft. The Thames-street frontage contains on the ground floor, in addition to the bar and general entrance and a sitting-room belonging to the hotel, two large and well-fitted shops. We were much struck on entering from Thames-street with the lofty and airy appearance of the interior. On the right of the entrance is the bar, 16 x 14 feet high. This is very handsomely fitted' up in oak graining, as is generally the case throughout the house. The front of the counter is especially noticeable from its beautiful panelling in walnut and bird's-eye maple \ the pilasters being done in Egyptian green, Vienna, and black and gold. At the back of the bar is a parI lor 15 x 15, with hand-marbled mantelpiece, &c. In this, as in all the rooms throughout the house there is plenty of light, the windows being 8 feet high, and single On the left of the passage, of whish the floor is of concrete, frona the Thames-street entrance, are two sitting-rooms, handsomely furnished in polished cedar and walnut, with magnificent mirrors and valuable paintings suspended from brass rods running round the cornices, these, as well as every sitting in the house, being furnished with electric bells. On the right of the private enterence in Coquet-street is a large private in furnishing which no expense has heen spared. The same remark holcls good throughout every room in the ' hotel. The comfort and convenience of the public has evidently been the principal study of the enterprising proprietor. Immediately opposite the private staircase, at the foot of which is a handsome carved newel post, with rosettes let in. On the upper floor are twelve single and three 4l,uble bedrooms, and a large papery. All these rooms are nicely carpeted and comfortably furnished, spring horsehair mattresses being a novelty in hotel furnishing. Gas is laid on throughout the house, and all the upper rooms are ventilated from the ceilings. When completed there will be 30 more rooms upstairs, including bathrooms and other- conveniences. Returning to the ground floor w© noticed a commodious kitchen, which, however, is only for- temporary use. On the Coquet-street front there will be when finished (whiah will be in about three months) a large dining-room 30 x 16, kitchen 20 x 16, and scullery, &c. ; also, four servants' bedrooms. A billiardroom for two tables will also be erected on the premises, which, with all attendant conveniences will be under one roof. We must not omit to mention the large cellar beneath the building, which is 80ft long by 16ft wide and §ft high, capable of holding 200, hogsheads. The building, which is of Oamaru stone, is of the composite order, carried out in high relief, which gives a bold and massive appearance to it. The architect is. Mr. Jas. Johnstone, and the contractors for the mason work Messrg. Qi\fsn and Watson, and fop the carpenter work Mr. Jas. Tait. Both outside and inside no expense has been spared to make the Globe Hotel one of the handsomest as well as most com" fortable and attractive hotels in the town. One especially good feature in the arrangements is the absolutely private entrance in Coquet-street. This has long been felt as a great want in most hotels in the Colony.
