POLITICAL INTELLIGENCE.
(from our own correspondent.) Wellington June 14.
Efforts are being made to induce a I meeting of the Opposition. Apaperifi being carried round for signatures. Mr. Mac--andrew promises to call a caucus if a sufficient number of signatures are procured. The idea of some of the leaders is that the caucus should consider the advisability of Mr. Macandrew resigning the lead in favor of Sir George Grey; but Messrs. Montgomery, Pyke, M'Caughan, and many others, are determined not to follow Sir George Grey. Mr. De Lautour intends introducing a bill to amend the Land Act, in view of the large area now held under pastoral leases shortly falling in. He proposes that these lands should not j vest in the Waste Lands Board, which, he says, are liable to be influenced by large land-owners, but in commissiohera appointed by the Government, and should be subject to competition. Both evening papers condemn the Treasurer's financial proposals as not going i far enough in the matter of retrenchment. Rigorous retrenchment, from Ministers downwards, is advocated.
