Fidler, of the High School, and Mr. A.. B. Todd, of the Otago University, and a son of the Rev. A. B. Todd—have passed the first section of the B.A. degree examination. Mr. J. M. Templeton is announced to deliver a lecture this evening, in the New Tees-street Hall, on " Things not generally known about Life Assurance." The members of the Philharmonic; Society will meet for practice this evening at eight o'clock, at the usual place. Soloists are requested to attend at half-past 7. As the concert will be given about the 18th, a full muster is particularly requested.

A very enjoyable affair took place last evening in the Imperial Hotel. The occasion was the presentation of a handsome watch and chain and an address to Mr. Hairy Newey on the eve of his departure for Ti'marn to assist his brothers in the conduct of the Criterion Hotel in that town. Mr, George Greenfield occupied the chair, arid, there were 20 gentlemen present. The Chairman, in a few very appropriate remarks, made the presentation, which was responded to in a feeling manner by the -recipient. The healths of Mr. and Mrs. Newey had been drunk in bumpers of champagne, the meeting shortly afterwards broke up, everyone present having enjoyed a very pleasant evening.
