Mr. Jones' Committee will meet at the Imperial Hotel this evening, at 8 o'clock. • A special meeting of the Oamaru Volunteer Fire Brigade will be held this evening, at the engine shed, at 7.30 o'clock, when it is necessary that every member should be present, as the business to be transacted is of importance.
At the Resident Magistrate's Court yesterday, the charge of sly grog-selling preferred against Bridget Dinan was, after the evidence had been heard, dismissed, his Worship saying that the evidence for the prosecution was inconclusive.
Mr. A. Chrystal's residence atWaiareka has been appointed a polling place for the election of members of the House of Representatives for the electoral district of W^aitaki.
Mails for Australian Colonies, per Rotorua, close at the Bluff at 11 a.m. on Friday, the 2Sth inst. Telegrams will be accepted at the Oamaru station accordingly. The Philharmonic Society will meet for practice at the Volunteer Hall, at S o'clock this evening.
The nomination of candidates to fill vacancies in the Road Boards, caused by the annual retirement of members, will be held on the dates and at the places set forth in our advertising columns, to which the attention of those interested is drawn. The Maerewhenaa river was in heavy flood last night and early this morning. At about 4 a.m. the water had risen to within a very short space of the footbridge, which seemed to be doomed. From that time, however, the water subsided. Mr. Jones, in consequence of the flooded condition of the river, did not reach Livingstone last night. We draw the attention of those of our readers who wish to invest in town property to the important sale to be held by Mr. A. H. Maude to-morrow, at his Stores, Harbor street, at noon. This is the largest sale of its kind that has taken place for some time, and the properties to be offered are in the best parts of the town for both residential and business purposes ; and as they are of a nature to suit- all classes of purchasers, a large attendance and spirited competition may be confidently expected. At the R.M. Court this morning, before Jas. Udall and Duncan Sutherland, Esq.'s, J.P.'s, five drunkards were dealt with. Richard Sircombe, for assaulting Constable M'Gaughran while in the execution of bis duty, and also for assaulting John O'Brien, wa3 remanded till Saturday, bail being allowed in one surety of LlO.
