The Oamaru Mail WEDNESDAY, MAY 26, 1880.
The Morning Herald, a paper which represents the opinions of the ruling class of the Colony, and in which Sir. George M'Lean. once a prominent member of the unfortunate Atkinson Ministry, is a large shareholder, has ventured to chose a member for the electors of Waitaki. It points out that "Mr. Jones is a red-hot Liberal of the most extreme Grey type. We would like the Herald to tell us whence it obtained such information. Mr.. Jones has not yet spoken. However, we j suppose that that does not matter much, so far as the Herald is concerned. Its ruling spirits are anxious to acquire another addition to the ranks of their friends and colleagues in Parliament, and that is sufficient excuse for jumping at such a conclusion. Mx. Jones might be grateful to the Herald for having sketched out a policy for him; but it is just possible that he may feel able to do so for himself. The Herald is quite certain that Mr. Jones will not be returned because of the opposition of Mr. Hislop, who has served the district so well in Parliament. Mr. Hislop may have been a perfect Gladstone when in Parliament, but he is no longer senator but elector Hislop. Mr. Hislop may have been the saviour of the district from absolute collapse, and the present generation may feel that for his good works his name should be immortalised in the patriotic songs of future generations—but still the electors will use j their own judgment.
