(PER PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON. May 24. A mail named William Kemp, a saw mill hand, was killed on the Wellington and Greytown Railway on Saturday. It appears that he was intoxicated and sitting asleep on the platform at the Silverstream station, when the steps of a first-class carriage caught his legs, and, throwing him under the wheels, both legs were broken and his body fearfully mangled. No blame is attached to the driver of the engine. May 25.
It appears that the fatal accident to the man Gilchrist happened in this way. The deceased fired at a bird and missed it, and called on his friend to fire at it. While the latter was making his way to fire the 2un exploded, and the contents entered the deceased's abdomen, killing him instantly. The jcharges against the captain and officers of the "Manawatu " are now proceeding.
CHRISTCHURCH. May 25. The steeplechase horse Swindler fell in the Grand National yesterday and died on entering the box last night. The jockey's Hankins and Keith who were injured are progressing favorably.
WANGANUI. May 25. A Volunteer review was held yesterday. The corps from Feilding and Palmerston came in by train, and found the Wanganui Rifles in review and sham fight on the racecourse.
DUNEDIN. May 25. The shop of Robert Bacon, bootmaker, Port Chalmers, was burned down -this morning. The building was insured in the Australian Alliance Office for L3OO. A man, name unknown, wa3 killed at Anderson's Bay railway crossing this morning.
GRAHAMSTOWN. May 25. The steamer Mem sahib is chartered to bring the Railway Commissioners here from Omahu on Thursday. Strong representations will be made re the Waikato railway. One of the largest turbines ever mad?

AUCKLAND. May 25. There was a disgraceful scene on die racecourse yesterday. Malvern got his le® caught in the scoria stones, and a broken leg resulted. An attempt was made to kill him with an axe but the handle broke, and the animal s head and face were fearfully hacked. The horse remained writhing in agony for some time tiil a second axe was procured.
