LATE ENGLISH NEWS.
(PER STEAMER AT AUCKLAND.) London, April 21. The recent attack by Mr. Gladstone on Austria continues to excite anger at Vienna. Mr. Gladstone's explanation is published in Vienna journals, aud states that he speaks only of individuals. The reported massacre of British troops by hostile Poultans between Quettah and Candahar is denied. The irritation existing between Russia and France, in consequence <>f the refusal of the latter to extradite Hartmann, has cooled down, ' Chanzv remains at St. Petersburg, and Count Orloff returns to Paris. The members of Earl Beaconsfield's Administration, with the exception of the Prime Minister, who was absent, were received by the Queen at Windsor to-day, when the official leaving took place, and the seals of office were delivered up. Her Majesty thanked the retiring Ministers for their services. Au Exhibition at Berlin has been opened with considerable ceremony by His Highness Frederick William, Crown Prince of Prussia. The appeal made to the Superior Court in San Francisco against the sentence passed on Dennis Kearney for using seditious language has been dismissed. Kearney was liberated on bail during the interim, but has been rearrested and committed to prison for the period of his sentence of six months, fie is also required to pay 5000 dols. imposed by Judge Rex. There is a split in the camp of the Home Rulers, the followers of Mr. Parnell being dissatisfied with the moderation of a small section of the party. The Nation newspaper identifies itself with the extreme party, and, in consequence of a violent article in a recent issue, the pi-oprietor. Arthur M. Sullivan, has been served with a writ for libel by Philip Callan, member for Dundalk, a well-known Home Ruler. Sir Charles Gavin Duffy is on a visit to Paris, where he intends to make a short stay.

Inquiries in well-informed quarters show that there is no foundation for the report that the Prince of Wales i 3 about to visit Australia.
Major George Canning Strahan, R.A. C., has been appointed Governor of Tasmania j Hon. John Pope Hennessy, C.M.G., Goverpor of Hong Kong, has been created a Knight vt the Order of St. Michael and St. George, Sir Henry Buller, Lieut.-Governor of Natal, will succeed Major Strachan at the Windward Islands.
