'-W Mavil; In order to meet increasing trade requirements, the Kaiapoi Woollen Mills will be kept going night and day from Monday next. A hundred hands are now employed in the mill, and the number will be largely increased. At last night's sitting of the Synod the Bishop of Melanesia presented a memorial £ronr "the - : temperance - bodies of Christchurch,' drawing ' the attention" of the Synod' to the terrible moral' and social evils resulting from the excessive use of alcoholic liquors. Judge Johnston proceeded to Wellington last night, to attend a sictiug of the Court of Appeal. In reply to a number of residents of Lyttelton and Christchurch, asking that the services be accepted of a Yolunteer Naval Brigade the Undersecretary for defence has written that the Government is unable to comply with the request as it has. no funds available to pay capitation, etc.; It is understood that the Railway Commission will proceed overland to the West Coast to-day, AUCKLAND. April 30. Petronel, winner of the two thousand guinea stakes at Newmarket, is by Musket, belonging to the Auckland Stud Company. Musket is looking remarkably well and ought to attract the attention of , southern breeders. Coombs has been committed for trial on both charges of embracery. Bail to the amount of L6OO has been allowed. Bail was speedily found. Coombe entered into the usual recognisances. The charge against R. M. Williams, chemist, was withdrawn, and he was discharged. May 1. The following news has been received from New Caledonia under date April 17th : The effects of the recent hurricane are gradually disappearing.—The Government have refused to vote compensation to the settlers who suffered by the recent revolt. —Suicides and murders have been numerous. A body was fotjnd in the harbor with one leg and one arm cut off. Two men and a woman were arrested on suspicion. The object of the murder is said to be that the man had seventy francs on him.—The Sliant copper mine has cleared up, and work has been resumed. —The grasshopper pest ia causing great loss. TIMARU. April 30. At a meeting of the Geraldine County Council to-day the following resolution was passed • " That the Governor be rer spectfully requested to issue an Order in Council prohibiting the importation of cattle by sea into any port of the Middle Island of New Zealand, either from the North Island or Australian Colonies, in consequence of the existence of pleuropneumonia. The Mercia, R. S. Lyman, and several other vessels have been chartered to load here for home.
