Crab- • tree was sentenced to a months' hard • labor for revolting cruelty to a mare. The animal was left to linger with a broken leg, which rotted away by degrees. She was seen eating wood and gnawing boards from the house. A veterinary surgeon ordered it to be destroyed, but no notice was taken. An . attempt was made to defend the case by stating that the horse was part of a bankrupt estate, and did not belong to defendant, but the trustee | swore that Crabtree had sent another horse in its plaoe to the sale, and the trustee had nothing to do with it. The prisoner, it turned out, had been convicted in January last on a similar charge, and the Magistrate, in passing sentence, spoke very strongly of the revolting inhumanity of the prisoner. . To-day (Tuesday) was appointed for the annual audit of the Borough accounts. On Saturday this was referred to by Qapt, Bower, in presence of all- the clerks. He had apparently some suspicion that everything was not quite right, as he said, " We will go into the accounts on Monday, and if they keep us all night we must go through them before the auditors come." - The office was then closed, and the boy. declared that all the doors were locked, and the windows fastened at that time. The collector's books were left on the table, as there was no room for them in the safe, but the block of receipts and license forma was on the shelf behind the collector's chair. This was all that could be learned of it in the office. Sergeant Mahon was left in charge, and Major Scully, Sergeant O'Malley, and Detective Grace went to prosecute inquiries outside. It was found that Shaw, accompanied by Mr. Davies, had called at the Mayor's at 6.30 on Sunday evening for the key of the office. He explained this by saying he must go to look for his overcoat, but he subsequently remembered that he had left it at Omahu. He returned the key almost immediately apd went away.
