(per press association.) WELLINGTON. March 29. The steamers Charles Edward and Grafton had a narrow escape from collision in the French Pass on Saturday night. The former just managed to Lack out of the channel in time. . The Druids' procession in regalia, and the fete at the Hutt, to-day, were a great success. The weather was fine, and the day was observed as a general holiday. The Premier left for the South in the Te Anau, DUNEDIN. March 29. The match Dunedin C.C. v. Christchurch Wanderers was won by Dunedin by 9 wickets. Dunedin's first innings closed for 151, and the Wanderers' second innings for 80, leaving Dunedin to get only 7 to win. CHBISTCHURCH. March 29. The New Zealand turf yesterday sustained a severe loss. Old Templeton, while taking his exercise, cannoned, by some extraordinary mishap, against a cow, and smashed his shoulder. The injuries were so severe that the gallant little racehorse had to be shot.
• HOKITIKA. March 29. The Hon. Mr. .Gisborne, M.H.R., addressed his constituents last week afc Ross and Woodstocks.' At each meeting he was well received, and unanimous votes of confidence in him as their representative were passed. Mr. Gisborne condemned the system of government by commission, which he characterised as neither fish' nor" flesh, but perhaps was a red herring drawn across the scent. He enlarged upon the unfair treatment the I West Coast bad; received in comparison with its imports and exports, TIMARTJ. ' March 29. Henry Thomas Reed, who was recently arrested here for embezzlement at Wallaroo three years since, was forwarded South by train to-day, en route to Melbourne. Grain is now coming in very freely, and samples are better than those received earlier.
