MUNICIPAL COUNCIL.
The fortnightly meeting of the Council was held last evening, when there were present—His "Worship the Mayor, Councillors Otterson, Mainland, Smith, Headland, Roberts, Humphrey, and Townsend. The minutes of the last meeting were read and confirmed, and the outward correspondence was read and approved. A letter was read from Mr. J. Harwood, asking for permission to deposit earth on the steep bank in Yare-street, opposite section 2, block 67. Permission 'was granted. The Engineer was instructed to supply Mr. J. Markham with the levels of Thames-street, opposite sections 15 and 16, block 4. Letters were read from the Treasury* announcing that L 357 13s 6d, balance of subsidy, and L 9 7s for by-law penalties, had been placed to, tlyj qredjt ths Qounqil. ' J
Anderson and Co. wrote offerfog > cargo of 215 tons of Greymouth Coal from the Coal Pit Heath Company, at;33s per ton delivered at the Gasworks siding. The matter was referred to the Gas Committee, with power to act. A letter from Messrs. Bright Brothers, forwarding an account for gas plant amounting to LSO, and a tracing of a scrubber, was deferred for further consideration. : A' letter was read from the Secretary to the Hospital Committee, asking for suggestions or recommendations with reference to the Hospital and Charitable Institutions Bill, and was referred to the Legislative Committee for report upon the Act. Mr. J. E. Clarke wrote', ' offering his services as an Inspector of Works. It was decided to reply that the Council were not in need of an Inspector. The following report from the Engineer was referred to the Waterworks Committee : ........ " I have nothing special to report upon with reference to the Waterworks, further than, that all the finished work is in excellent order, and that very fair progress is being made with all the works under contract. "Tenders for pipe-laying, &c., will be laid before you this evening, and I send herewith copies of plans and specifications, and quantities relating thereto, together with my probable estimate of cost. " I have now ordered the reservoir gang to be reduced to 12 men on Saturday first, as the work is getting fast through ; but in order to finish up the rest of the work, from HalPs downwards, another gang of 10 or 12 men will be required. " I would recommend that another dray horse be purchased, to work with the one we already have at Papakaio, as the necessary carting can be done considerably cheaper in this way than by hiring." Councillor Roberts, in accordance with notice of motion, then moved, " That two fire inspectors be appointed for the town and that the Inspector of Police foy- the time being and the captain of the Fire Brigade should be recommended to the Governor for the appointments." Councillor Smith seconded the motion, upon which some, discussion took place, during whiqli Councillor Humphrey suggested th& appointment of two inspectors entirely outside of the Police and Brigade, while Councillor Headland thought that onej inspector would be sufficient, as there would be the danger of a conflict of authority, and suggested that the Inspector of Police was the most suitable person for the appointment. Eventually Councillor Headland's suggestion was adopted, and it was decided to recommend the Governor to appoint the Inspector of Police for the time being as a fire inspector. The CounQii then went into Committee to consider the tenders for the several works connected with the Waterworks. The following tenders were accepted : Pipe-laying : No. . 1 contract, Messrs. Barraclough and, Walsh, LB7l lis 2d j No. 2 contract, Messrs. A. and T. Burt, LIQ6X 6s 8d ; ' No. 3 contract, Messrs. A. and T. Burt, L 765 19s 3d.
